Signature Clay Mask - Instructions

*Before applying any of our masks to your face, we suggest following our mixing instructions and testing a small amount on the back of your hand. If you have eczema, psoriasis or any other skin inflammation or condition, we strongly encourage you to test our masks on your hand first! If your skin becomes irritated or sensitive, please do not apply it to your face and instead give it to a friend.

Step 1. Gather your supplies

You will need a small bowl, measuring spoon, your clay mask and your mixing liquid of choice. We find that water, rosewater or apple cider vinegar all work well. If you have hair that could get in your face, make sure to tie it back or put on a headband.

Optional: We like to apply our mask with a brush or spoon, but it's totally optional and up to you!

Step 2. Measure and mix

Measure out a 1/2 tsp of clay mask and 2 tsp of mixing liquid in your mixing bowl (1:4 mask to water ratio). Mix together until smooth and combined. The mask should be completely opaque, thin and spreadable. It will look like slightly gritty coffee and should not drip off your skin easily.

*If you don't have a measuring spoon, 1/2 tsp is approximately the size of your pinky nail. It’s very small!

If it's too paste-like, add more mixing liquid and mix until you get the right consistency. If it's overly watery, add a pinch of mask and mix until you get the right consistency.

Here's an example of the right consistency:

Step 3. Apply the mask

Using your fingers or a brush, apply a thin layer of the mask evenly all over your face. Avoid your eyes and nostrils! Here's what it should look like:

Let the mask dry for 5-10 minutes while you enjoy a book, catch up on internet cat videos or do whatever else floats your boat. The mask will not completely harden during this time, but the clay will help bring impurities to the surface of your skin. You might be tempted to leave the mask on longer, but leaving it on for more than 10 minutes may dry out your skin more than necessary and result in your skin overproducing oil to compensate for lost moisture. Here's what it may look like:

Step 4. Wash off the mask

Gently wash off the mask with warm water until you have removed all of the clay. If you don’t want to wash it off in the sink, you can also wash it off in the shower!

Step 5. Apply your skincare routine

Dry off, follow your regular skincare routine, and keep on being awesome!

Clay masks are most effective when used regularly, every 2-3 weeks. Don’t forget to use sunscreen and sun protection after using any masks, in order to prevent irritation and inflammation.

It is normal to experience small breakouts 1-2 days after applying the mask for the first time since the clay is helping draw out oils from your skin. If this happens, treat the breakout as you normally would and try to avoid touching, poking or popping your skin in order to avoid scarring.
